Bernard Perlin painted The Farewell while living in Italy, supported partially by Fulbright and Guggenheim fellowships. The spidery network of tree limbs and the soft crimson of the forest floor are a beautiful study of line and color. A couple walking toward the left side of the canvas and a single figure at right introduce a narrative. The painting’s title simultaneously links the figures and indicates their parting.
